警探約翰·麥卡倫從紐約來(lái)到洛杉磯，見(jiàn)他分別已有半年之久的妻子霍莉。他被邀請(qǐng)參加在一棟大廈的30層舉行的圣誕晚會(huì)。然而一群匪徒卻打起了大廈金庫(kù)中存有的六億多元公債券的主意。他們封鎖了大樓，將參加晚會(huì)的人扣作人質(zhì)。麥卡倫僥幸逃脫，只身與匪徒們展開(kāi)了周旋。他先后用火警鈴和無(wú)線電向外求救，卻都未能成功。情急之下，他將一名匪徒的尸體從樓上扔了下去，砸在前來(lái)巡視的黑人警員鮑威爾車(chē)上，才算是報(bào)警成功。麥卡倫通過(guò)無(wú)線電與鮑威爾保持著聯(lián)系。然而趕到的警方負(fù)責(zé)人的官僚作風(fēng)卻給他添了不少麻煩。他一面與匪徒作戰(zhàn)，一面還要幫助警方消滅匪徒的導(dǎo)彈發(fā)射器。匪首漢斯與麥卡倫之間展開(kāi)了一場(chǎng)斗智斗勇的較量。而趕到的聯(lián)邦調(diào)查局官員的愚蠢自大的行動(dòng)更幫助匪徒們開(kāi)啟了金庫(kù)，達(dá)到了目的。這一切都使麥卡倫的處境更加困難。漢斯在屋頂上裝了炸藥，企圖把人質(zhì)和聯(lián)邦調(diào)查局的營(yíng)救直升機(jī)一同炸掉。麥卡倫與搜尋他的匪徒之間進(jìn)行了一場(chǎng)苦斗。而此時(shí)新聞?dòng)浾叩谋氨尚袨楦够衾虮┞读松矸荩幘掣游ｋU(xiǎn)。麥卡倫打敗了匪徒，沖上屋頂將人質(zhì)趕回了大樓。但他卻受到聯(lián)邦官員的攻擊，苦不堪言，麥卡倫以一條水龍帶逃離了屋頂。 在巨大的爆炸中， 屋頂被化為火海，直升機(jī)也被炸毀，麥卡倫這才總算沒(méi)有死在自己人的槍口下。進(jìn)入樓中的麥卡倫遇見(jiàn)了正要攜款逃離的漢斯。在一番較量之后，麥卡倫救出了霍莉。漢斯從樓中摔落，得到了應(yīng)有的下場(chǎng)。在滿天飛舞的公債券中，麥卡倫帶著妻子乘車(chē)離去。
