Mastodon

要問近幾年最走紅的金屬樂隊是哪支？Mastodon（乳齒象，一種史前巨獸）絕對算得上一支。這是NWOAHM的一分子，但它絕對不是Metalcore，至今還沒有一個詞能確切的形容出他們的風格，也沒有任何一個樂隊和他們相似，前衛(wèi)金屬、泥漿金屬、死亡、硬核、激流、試驗音樂等多種成分融合其間，或許只能用“先鋒金屬”一詞來形容它的風格。 樂隊的主創(chuàng)者是來自紐約的爵士/硬核樂隊Lethargy的鼓手Brann Dailor和吉他手Bill Kelliher。兩人還于99年在底特律加入了樂隊Today is the Day，幫助錄制了專輯In the eyes of god。之后回到老家紐約活動了一段時間，又去到喬治亞洲亞特蘭大尋求發(fā)展。2000年1月，樂隊到達亞特蘭大僅三周后，兩人在High on Fire的一場演出上遇見了貝司手Troy Sanders和吉他手Brent Hinds，四人一拍即合，組建了Mastodon，并于6月自行發(fā)行了一張demo，在地下圈初露頭角。此時樂隊還只是比較純粹的碾核/死亡。憑借一系列的巡演和小樣，樂隊終于贏得了著名的極端金屬公司Relapse的一紙和約。在和Eyehategod、Burnt by the Sun等樂隊的一系列巡演后，01年8月樂隊正式發(fā)行了第一張EP《Lfeblood》，在這張還比較稚嫩的作品里，樂隊已顯示出另類的編排和節(jié)奏。02年樂隊的首張專輯Remission發(fā)行立刻引起關(guān)注，專輯受到了極高的評價，在當年英國極端金屬權(quán)威雜志Terrorizer樂評人投票的年度最佳專輯里名列第八——甚至擊敗了Killswitch Engage、Vader、Arch Enemy等樂隊同年的優(yōu)秀作品，幾乎所有媒體都給專集打了90%以上的分數(shù)。樂隊于是和Darkane、The Haunted等踏上了熱火朝天的巡演之中，一時間成為了炙手可熱的新秀。一個樂隊在第一張專集的起點太高，第二張往往難以有突破，然而Mastodon不是這樣的樂隊。04年，樂隊用更加成熟的專輯Leviathan證明了自己的實力超群——專輯受到的好評絲毫不亞于前作，更在上市第一周就賣出8000張，名列Billboard第193位——這對于一只極端金屬樂隊來說是很不可思議的數(shù)字了。此后和樂隊一同巡演的就變?yōu)槌壌笈屏?，一場場和Slayer、Isis、Fear Factory的巡演為樂隊贏得了更多的樂迷。05年樂隊還參加了Ozzfest音樂節(jié)，和Rob Zombie、The Haunted等分享了第二舞臺。今年初，樂隊發(fā)行了首張DVD，并集結(jié)早期小樣里的作品發(fā)行了精選《Call of the Mastodon》。樂隊目前正在新的一輪巡演中，其前途可謂一片光明。 by William York The Atlanta, GA, quartet Mastodon plays an innovative, hard-to-categorize blend of metal, grindcore, and hardcore that puts them right at home on the Relapse label alongside the likes of Today Is the Day, the Dillinger Escape Plan, Coalesce, Burnt by the Sun, and other boundary-crossing acts. The group's lineup actually includes two former members of Today Is the Day: guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Bränn Dailor (both also onetime members of the band Lethargy). Their lineup is rounded out by bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders and guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds. They released their debut EP, Lifesblood, on Relapse in the fall of 2001. Remission was released the following year, and after the band toured for much of 2003, a second full-length, Leviathan, arrived in 2004. In 2006, the group compiled all of their early recordings -- including the tracks from the Lifesblood EP -- and released Call of the Mastodon. It was followed by the DVD Workhorse Chronicles and the all-new Blood Mountain.
