要問(wèn)近幾年最走紅的金屬樂(lè)隊(duì)是哪支？Mastodon（乳齒象，一種史前巨獸）絕對(duì)算得上一支。這是NWOAHM的一分子，但它絕對(duì)不是Metalcore，至今還沒(méi)有一個(gè)詞能確切的形容出他們的風(fēng)格，也沒(méi)有任何一個(gè)樂(lè)隊(duì)和他們相似，前衛(wèi)金屬、泥漿金屬、死亡、硬核、激流、試驗(yàn)音樂(lè)等多種成分融合其間，或許只能用“先鋒金屬”一詞來(lái)形容它的風(fēng)格。 樂(lè)隊(duì)的主創(chuàng)者是來(lái)自紐約的爵士/硬核樂(lè)隊(duì)Lethargy的鼓手Brann Dailor和吉他手Bill Kelliher。兩人還于99年在底特律加入了樂(lè)隊(duì)Today is the Day，幫助錄制了專輯In the eyes of god。之后回到老家紐約活動(dòng)了一段時(shí)間，又去到喬治亞洲亞特蘭大尋求發(fā)展。2000年1月，樂(lè)隊(duì)到達(dá)亞特蘭大僅三周后，兩人在High on Fire的一場(chǎng)演出上遇見(jiàn)了貝司手Troy Sanders和吉他手Brent Hinds，四人一拍即合，組建了Mastodon，并于6月自行發(fā)行了一張demo，在地下圈初露頭角。此時(shí)樂(lè)隊(duì)還只是比較純粹的碾核/死亡。憑借一系列的巡演和小樣，樂(lè)隊(duì)終于贏得了著名的極端金屬公司Relapse的一紙和約。在和Eyehategod、Burnt by the Sun等樂(lè)隊(duì)的一系列巡演后，01年8月樂(lè)隊(duì)正式發(fā)行了第一張EP《Lfeblood》，在這張還比較稚嫩的作品里，樂(lè)隊(duì)已顯示出另類的編排和節(jié)奏。02年樂(lè)隊(duì)的首張專輯Remission發(fā)行立刻引起關(guān)注，專輯受到了極高的評(píng)價(jià)，在當(dāng)年英國(guó)極端金屬權(quán)威雜志Terrorizer樂(lè)評(píng)人投票的年度最佳專輯里名列第八——甚至擊敗了Killswitch Engage、Vader、Arch Enemy等樂(lè)隊(duì)同年的優(yōu)秀作品，幾乎所有媒體都給專集打了90%以上的分?jǐn)?shù)。樂(lè)隊(duì)于是和Darkane、The Haunted等踏上了熱火朝天的巡演之中，一時(shí)間成為了炙手可熱的新秀。一個(gè)樂(lè)隊(duì)在第一張專集的起點(diǎn)太高，第二張往往難以有突破，然而Mastodon不是這樣的樂(lè)隊(duì)。04年，樂(lè)隊(duì)用更加成熟的專輯Leviathan證明了自己的實(shí)力超群——專輯受到的好評(píng)絲毫不亞于前作，更在上市第一周就賣出8000張，名列Billboard第193位——這對(duì)于一只極端金屬樂(lè)隊(duì)來(lái)說(shuō)是很不可思議的數(shù)字了。此后和樂(lè)隊(duì)一同巡演的就變?yōu)槌?jí)大牌了，一場(chǎng)場(chǎng)和Slayer、Isis、Fear Factory的巡演為樂(lè)隊(duì)贏得了更多的樂(lè)迷。05年樂(lè)隊(duì)還參加了Ozzfest音樂(lè)節(jié)，和Rob Zombie、The Haunted等分享了第二舞臺(tái)。今年初，樂(lè)隊(duì)發(fā)行了首張DVD，并集結(jié)早期小樣里的作品發(fā)行了精選《Call of the Mastodon》。樂(lè)隊(duì)目前正在新的一輪巡演中，其前途可謂一片光明。 by William York The Atlanta, GA, quartet Mastodon plays an innovative, hard-to-categorize blend of metal, grindcore, and hardcore that puts them right at home on the Relapse label alongside the likes of Today Is the Day, the Dillinger Escape Plan, Coalesce, Burnt by the Sun, and other boundary-crossing acts. The group's lineup actually includes two former members of Today Is the Day: guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Bränn Dailor (both also onetime members of the band Lethargy). Their lineup is rounded out by bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders and guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds. They released their debut EP, Lifesblood, on Relapse in the fall of 2001. Remission was released the following year, and after the band toured for much of 2003, a second full-length, Leviathan, arrived in 2004. In 2006, the group compiled all of their early recordings -- including the tracks from the Lifesblood EP -- and released Call of the Mastodon.
